The Complete Phobias List A-Z

The Biggest and Most Accurate Phobias List Around

    What is a Phobia?

Phobias are fear responses that are out of proportion to the threat or danger of the specific trigger. Phobias are different from simple fears that everyone has from time to time, but there can be some overlap. Most of us have some specific things we find frightening, sometimes it can be a strong response that feels very uncomfortable, but usually, even with a strong fear, we can still stay in control, we may feel pretty dreadful at the time but we are usually able to ‘act normal’.

With phobias it is less likely that the person can achieve this and be able to successfully hide their reaction as it is likely to be a very extreme feeling. A phobia can trigger powerful reactions that are hard to cope with. At times these reactions may be observable by others such as hyperventilating, panic attacks, crying, shouting, shaking or running away. This is because the fear response is so powerful and overwhelming it can override normal social behaviors we display in public. The fear is so overwhelming it takes over.

    Phobias are Common

Phobias are much more common than a lot of people might realize. People who do not have a phobia may have a hard time understanding what it is and why the reaction so powerful. Millions of people suffer with phobias and many are multi-phobic. It is common to have a phobia of something if your parent had a phobia and it does not necessarily mean it will be a phobia of exactly the same type. People have phobias of situations and environments – (think fear of heights), and also of objects or animals. Often there is no obvious or logical reason known of that might have caused the phobia.

    Common Phobias

We probably all know someone who is terrified of spiders or snakes. It is interesting that many of the most common phobias are perhaps hard-wired into us as part of our survival instinct. That fearful response designed to help keep us safe and avoid danger becomes exaggerated in phobic reactions. It is a very uncomfortable experience as anyone with a phobia will know. The key is to redefine the response and this is achievable and very worthwhile.
