Overcome Fear of Being a Passenger in a Car

Instant Hypnosis Download or Hypnotherapy CD

Understanding Car Passenger Anxiety

Some people develop a fear of being a passenger in a car and there are several reasons why this might happen. Before this anxiety became a problem, they may have quite happily been a passenger many times and felt perfectly calm and relaxed. Passenger anxiety is quite common and it can affect both adults and children.

What Causes Car Passenger Anxiety?

One obvious cause is having been involved in a car accident where someone else was driving, or perhaps a near miss. However being anxious as a car passenger can happen for many less dramatic reasons than being in an accident. The subconscious mind can very easily connect feeling afraid with certain circumstances you may be experiencing at the time. For example, if you had a panic attack while a passenger in a car, if you suddenly had uncomfortable thoughts about not being in control, 'what if' scenarios or develop that habit of being hypervigilant when you are a passenger.

People with car passenger anxiety may grip tightly onto the seat or door handle, they may constantly ask the driver to slow down, be careful or look out. This can become a problem for the driver too, because someone acting like this while they are driving could be very distracting.

Why Am I More Anxious as a Passenger Than When Driving Myself?

Many fears and phobias follow a similar pattern, a feeling of not being able to escape the situation, of being unable to control things and being at the mercy of the unknown events, circumstance or actions of others. Being a passenger involves lack of control, whereas when you are driving, you feel in control again. As a passenger you may feel uncomfortable that you can't predict what the driver is about to do and you may be afraid they will make a terrible mistake. While in the passenger seat you may feel unable to escape the situation, and feeling trapped can increase anxiety significantly.

FAQs

Why am I scared of being a passenger?

Some people feel very anxious as a passenger in a car because they are not in control of the vehicle and fear something bad is going to happen. Many people who have this fear are fine driving themselves but just feel extremely anxious when someone else is driving. When you are driving, it is you who decides when to brake, steer or slow down. It may be that you trust your own driving abilities or that concentrating shuts out the fear.

As a passenger, you have to trust the driver to make the right decisions, to drive well and drive safely. This feeling of lack of control can make some people feel anxious, and it is especially likely if they have experienced a previous accident, anticipate accidents or already have anxiety. This hypnosis is designed to help you feel calmer, more relaxed and more confident while travelling as a passenger.

Can hypnosis help passenger anxiety?

Yes. Hypnosis can help to reduce anxiety and interrupt anxious thought patterns. This hypnosis includes mental rehearsal of being a passenger and feeling absolutely fine. Gradually as your confidence grows you can test out taking short trips as a passenger. As you notice the fear subsiding, you find yourself feeling calmer and more confident while travelling, you can just trust the driver and relax. With repetition you find that calmer confidence as a passenger becomes routine and you may find you begin to enjoy travelling by car again.

What causes passenger anxiety?

Passenger anxiety can develop for many different reasons. Some people with this fear may have experienced a road traffic accident, or witnessed a dangerous driving incident. It can also happen from feeling anxious or having a panic attack while travelling by car and your subconscious mind connects the anxious response with being in the passenger seat. For many people it develops because they feel they have no control over the situation or fear being in an accident. Whatever the cause, passenger anxiety is a learned anxiety response that can often be improved through self hypnosis and desensitization. As your confidence is restored and the automatic thought patterns that trigger the fear change, you feel calmer and more relaxed.

Why do I feel safer when I'm driving?

Many people feel much calmer when they are driving because they feel more in control and may believe they can drive more safely. As the driver it is you who decides how fast to drive, when to brake and what route to take. When you are a passenger you have to trust someone else's skill, focus and judgement and this can make some people feel anxious. This self hypnosis is designed to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed, so you are able to trust the driver and let them take control of the driving.

Can panic attacks happen in the car?
