Understanding Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder that causes a fear of situations where it is difficult to escape quickly. Often the fear is combined with fear of having a panic attack when in such a situation. People often think that agoraphobia is just a fear of open spaces or of going outside but it is significantly more complicated and also overlaps with several other phobias such as fear of lifts and elevators, fear of crowds or crowded areas such as public transport, fear of flying or travelling by car.

Fear of Panic attacks is a Major Feature of Agoraphobia

One of the main problems for people with agoraphobia is the fear of having a panic attack in a place where leaving suddenly would feel difficult or embarrassing.

An example might be an appointment at the hairdressers where you have just sat in the chair with the hairdressing cape on and you know you are stuck there for at least half an hour or more. This fear can create a cycle where the fear of an anxiety attack makes you even more anxious. People with agoraphobia may at first not identify that agoraphobia is the issue at hand, so they may begin avoiding places or situations that trigger this feeling, thinking they have a problem with those specific places but they don't know why.

Avoidance Makes Phobias Worse

Avoidance can seem like the logical response because it frees you from the dread and panic of facing these situations. Unfortunately, as with any phobia, avoidance actually reinforces the fear response. As your subconscious mind automatically concludes that avoiding something must mean it is dangerous. Sometimes people with agoraphobia find themselves restricting where they go, asking people to go with them or just avoid leaving home altogether.

Coping Strategies

People with agoraphobia often develop coping strategies to help them feel more secure. These may be things like checking places they want to go to in detail online. For example they may analyze photographs of the interior of a restaurant before visiting to work out where the exits are, how the seating is arranged and where the toilets are. Or they may completely avoid unfamiliar places. These behaviors may reduce anxiety in the short term, but they limit their lives and narrow opportunities to improve.

How to Recover From Agoraphobia

Recovering from agoraphobia usually involves gradually taking small, manageable steps out of your comfort zone. This process, often called gradual exposure or desensitization involves facing feared situations at a slow, steady pace that feels achievable. In our agoraphobia hypnosis you will hear positive hypnotic suggestions that calm your anxiety responses. As your confidence grows and you feel calmer, you may find situations that used to feel uncomfortable or even impossible become easier. Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars "Hypnosis to Reduce Fear of New Experiences and Places! Hypnosis is so relaxing that I try to listen to one CD a day. In colder weather I feel it works best to put on a sweater and socks and to lay in a comfortable bed with a heated mattress pad and blanket or duvet. I say this because it can get cold laying still for a while.
This CD has two hypnosis sessions. One is a waking hypnosis where at the end you are back to reality and alert afterwards. The second is a hypnosis that leads you into a sleepy state so you can drift off to sleep with music and ocean waves. This CD helps you feel positive about leaving the house and promotes a more confident and calm attitude so you don't fear new experiences and unfamiliar places.

Rachael Eccles has a real talent for visualization and takes you to a peaceful beach. Her soothing voice will help you relax and solve your issues too! Give this CD some time to work. Being afraid of going outside is a real problem and takes some psychological work to undo. I am happy going to familiar places but still struggle with going to new stores, parks etc. This summer I'm going to start to be more adventurous so planning ahead!" FAQs

Can hypnosis help agoraphobia?

Yes. Hypnosis can help by reducing anxiety, mentally rehearsing feeling calm and confident and changing the automatic thoughts and feelings associated with agoraphobia. This agoraphobia hypnosis is designed to help change the anxious cycle, to help you feel calm, relaxed and positive about leaving your home and visiting places. With practice you will find that situations that used to trigger you and make you anxious, are manageable. As you progress, a feeling of confidence and ability top cope helps you feel just as relaxed and comfortable as you would want to be.

What causes agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia is something that may develop after several experiences where you felt very anxious or had a panic attack. The phobic response is learned, through experiencing intense anxiety and mentally connecting it with the specific situation at that moment. Anyone with a social phobia like agoraphobia can sometimes get caught in an anxiety cycle where the phobia is more focused on the fear of having a panic attack than any specific detail about the location, other than a feeling that escape might be difficult. As a result, it is common to start avoiding situations that might be difficult. Avoidance tends to make things worse by increasing anxiety and gradually seeing confidence dwindle. Stressful life events can also play a part in the development of this phobia, as can family members with phobias, or the existence of other anxiety disorders.

Can agoraphobia be cured?

Many people do recover from agoraphobia or experience some significant improvements. Recovery involves gradually expanding your comfort zone, rebuilding confidence, and overcoming the fear of anxiety or panic attacks. There are several approaches that may help including medication (where appropriate), counselling, CBT and hypnosis. The most important element of overcoming agoraphobia is gradual exposure, and hypnosis can support you in this by reducing anxiety and helping to change the automatic phobic response. With practice you can get your independence and freedom back and go to places without difficulty.

How long does agoraphobia last?

There is no set amount of time as everyone is different. With help, some people recover within a few months, but for some people, they may continue to have difficulty for longer. Generally, the sooner you begin addressing agoraphobia, the easier it is to resist continuing with avoidance behaviors. For some people, they may choose to expand their horizons in a limited way so they can enjoy life more and go out more but may continue to avoid unfamiliar places when they can. Another important factor in helping overcome agoraphobia is developing the skill of stopping a panic attack when it starts. If you overcome the panic response, there is less to fear when in unfamiliar places or feeling stuck.

Is agoraphobia linked to panic attacks?

Yes, very much so. Many people with agoraphobia also experience panic attacks or have previously had panic attacks. Part of the issue with agoraphobia is the fear of having a panic attack in public or in unfamiliar places. The thought of being stuck, trapped and not knowing where to go to escape is a terrifying thought for someone with agoraphobia. This leads people to avoid unfamiliar situations altogether. This hypnosis is designed to help reduce this anxiety and fear of places, help you to feel calm , confidence and able to cope, when facing situations that previously caused fear or panic. You may also find our article on how to stop a panic attack helpful. Or Go to our Overcome Panic Attacks Hypnosis here.

Can self hypnosis help me leave the house?

Yes. This self hypnosis is designed to help you feel calmer, more confident and more in control as you gradually face situations that previously made you very anxious. Hypnosis may make it easier for you to leave the house, little by little, you can go to new places, unfamiliar places with confidence. It is designed to complement gradual progress in overcoming agoraphobia and can be used alongside professional treatment from your doctor.

Is exposure therapy helpful for agoraphobia?

Yes. Gradual exposure or desensitization is widely used for many kinds of phobias. It involves taking small, manageable steps to face the feared situation gradually. This tests and builds a new response internally that replaces the phobic reaction, each time you take a small step out of your comfort zone it teaches your subconscious that everything is ok and you are not in danger. This process builds your confidence that you can overcome this and feel comfortable. This hypnosis is designed to complement this process by helping you feel calm, much less anxious and strengthens your motivation as you expand your comfort zone.
