Fears and Phobias What is the Difference?
Without a clear understanding of what a phobia actually is, this list of phobias could be confusing. If you suffer from a phobia you will know that it is an irrational and extreme reaction, not a simple dislike or ordinary fear that anyone might have. So how does a phobia differ from a simple fear?
What is a Phobia?
A phobia an an extreme and persistent fear reaction to a given object, event or situation. This fear is so intense that it often causes the individual to attempt to avoid the triggers and situations that might cause it. When reading through this list of phobias you may identify several interconnected phobias that you may have. Phobias can result in unpleasant mental and physical reactions such as:
- A feeling of impending doom
- Shaking
- Sweating
- Heart racing or palpitations
- Panic attacks
- Feelings of weakness in arms and legs.
How Common are Phobias?
According to the National Institute of Health, an estimated 9.1% of U.S. adults aged 18 and over suffer from a specific phobia. Often women see to have phobias more commonly than men. Of the adults that had a phobia, 21.9% rated it as serious, 30.0% as moderate and the remaining 48.1% rated it as causing mild impairment.
Types of Phobia
There are two types of phobia:
Specific Phobias:
This type of phobia is about a particular item or situation, such as fear of wasps or fear of heights. There are several types of specific phobias such as situational, animal, body and medical as you will see in the a-z list below.
Complex Phobias:
