Why am I Afraid of Elevators?
Fear of lifts and elevators is quite a common fear and it is sometimes but not always connected with claustrophobia (fear of small spaces). For many people the fear is about feeling trapped and worries about what if the lift breaks down? This thought can create a cycle of anxious thoughts about panicking and losing control if this was to happen. People with this fear are often stuck in avoidance, but unfortunately avoiding using lifts only makes the anxiety about them worse.
Some people will use a lift as long as nobody else is in it, for others they may only use large lifts and never use small ones under any circumstances. If you are wondering why you are afraid of elevators it can also be traced back to childhood for some people, where a relative was afraid of lifts and you subconsciously picked up the reactions.
It can be embarrassing and restrictive having this phobia, as you know there is no really danger but your body just reacts this way. The good news is that this phobia can be overcome. Phobias are simply an over-reaction, and learning a calmer response, and gradually practicing going in a lift will help you overcome this fear.
Is Fear of Elevators a Recognized Phobia?
Yes. It is a specific phobia which is sometimes linked to claustrophobia. People with this phobia may have experienced panic attacks when in lifts and this increases the fear because effectively they can end up with a fear of lifts, fear of small spaces and the fear of having another panic attack, along with the fear of embarrassing themselves if other people are also in the lift.
Avoidance strengthens the fear because subconsciously avoiding something like this communicates to the subconscious mind that is must be dangerous. This reinforces the fear considerably. Gradual exposure or desensitization can help overcome many phobias including a phobia of lifts, it is easier to do this when also using a hypnosis audio to reinforce positive change and calm the mind and body.

FAQs
Can hypnosis help me overcome a fear of elevators?
Yes. The way hypnosis works is by influencing your subconscious mind to change the automatic fear response. It also includes positive hypnotic suggestions about feeling calm, confident and in control near or in lifts or elevators. This hypnosis is designed to help you feel much calmer and able to gradually face your fear at your own pace by moving towards using lifts again in the future.
Is fear of elevators the same as claustrophobia?
Sometimes it is connected, but not always. Some people with a fear of elevators also have claustrophobia, which is a fear of enclosed spaces. However many people with a fear of elevators are not specifically afraid of the small space itself, there are other factors causing their fear. This may be the fear of being trapped in a lift, panicking and losing control.
For many people with this phobia, if they think of or see an elevator, they may instantly imagine being trapped, panicking, making a scene and feeling embarrassed or humiliated by the experience. For other people the fear is mainly about the size of the space and the feeling of being trapped as the doors close and may feel more anxious if other people enter the lift once they are in it. This hypnosis is designed to help reduce all of these anxious reactions and help you build a calm response.
How long does it take to overcome a fear of lifts?
Everyone is different, so it does vary from person to person. Some people may notice positive changes after just a few sessions, while other people find the improvements happen gradually. Regular listening helps reinforce the positive hypnotic suggestions. Taking small, gradual steps towards using lifts can also help build your confidence.
Can I still use elevators while listening to the hypnosis?
Yes. In fact using elevators as your confidence improves is an important part of overcoming the fear because by doing so, you are reinforcing the important message to yourself that there is no danger. Do not rush or force yourself into situations that feel overwhelming, just take it one step at a time. With practice your confidence will grow and anxiety will fade.
What causes a fear of elevators?
A fear of elevators can develop for many different reasons. It may begin after a frightening experience such as feeling trapped in a lift, having a panic attack or hearing about a frightening experience. The fear can develop gradually without an obvious cause or it could have been observed in a relative where you subconsciously concluded lifts might be dangerous. Phobias are learned responses that gradually become automatic. The good news is leanred responses like this can also be unlearned and replaced with calm reactions. This hypnosis is designed to help you replace the automatic fear response with calmer, more positive and confident feelings.
