Metaphorical Language
Using metaphorical language in hypnosis is a traditional technique that was used by well known hypnotherapist Milton Erikson. The use of stories and metaphors can be relaxing and enjoyable for the listener and can take any feeling of pressure off, especially if the subject matter creates an uncomfortable reaction.
An example of a metaphorical suggestion is in the case of Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) there may be suggestions about a lake or river that is flowing fast and that you are calming and slowing it down, clearing any blocks and creating a perfect calm body of water. This can help the IBS sufferer to visualize and image their bowels and colon being calm and relaxed and any anxiety also being calmed. This technique was originally developed by Professor Peter Whorrell. To find out more, click here to go to a recorded interview with him, its a real gem.
