Many people are curious about hypnosis but feel unsure what it might feel like. It is common to wonder whether you may lose control or that something unusual will happen.
The reality is that hypnosis is a deeply relaxing and pleasant experience much like meditation or daydreaming. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention which most people find very calming. In this article let’s explore what hypnosis feels like, what you may notice during a hypnosis session and why it can be so helpful and therapeutic for relaxation, wellness and positive change.
What Hypnosis Feels Like for Most People
For most people hypnosis feels like a calm and deep state of relaxation. When you experience this, your attention becomes directed inward. It feels like the feeling you may get when daydreaming, meditating or being absorbed in a compelling movie or book.
Sometimes people expect hypnosis to feel unusual or even strange, but in fact it usually simply feels comfortable and natural. You may notice that as your body begins to relax deeply, your breathing starts to slow and feel easier. As this occurs, your mind may become quieter, peaceful and less distracted.
As this happens, you remain awake and aware of what is happening around you. You can hear the guidance on the hypnosis recording. Some people become extremely relaxed, physically and mentally, but other people may feel a lighter more subtle sense of relaxation and calm. Both of these responses are perfectly normal.
There is no single ‘correct’ way hypnosis should feel. The experience varies from person to person and even from session to session. What is important, is to allow yourself to follow the guidance as best you can, and go with the process. You can learn more about how hypnosis works in this article on how hypnosis works.

Is Hypnosis Like Being Asleep?
It is common to believe that hypnosis is similar to being asleep or unconscious. In reality, this is rarely the case. During a hypnosis session, you are guided into a state of relaxation, but you usually remain awake and in control the whole time.
With regular practice, you may find that you achieve deeper states of relaxation and enter a deeper hypnotic trance (learn more about what a hypnotic trance is). When this occurs, it can in some cases, lead to falling asleep. For this reason many people choose to listen to their hypnosis downloads when they are not especially tired. Some recordings are designed specifically to guide you into deep hypnosis and then sleep.
Even in deeper trance states, you remain conscious and able to hear what is being said, although you may find that you mentally drift off a little, in and out of focused attention. Some people do not reach deep trance states and some do so easily, it is very individual and does not tend to affect the result. For most people hypnosis is a state of relaxation similar to the feeling you have just before falling asleep or drifting into a daydream. You may feel calm, less aware or bothered by distractions around you but you can still hear and you could stop the process any time you wanted. To understand more about the overall process, you may find my article on what hypnosis is helpful.
Rather than being asleep hypnosis is better described as a deeply relaxed state where your attention is focused and directed inward. If you would like to understand the process in more detail, you can read my article on how hypnosis works.
What You Might Experience During Hypnosis
People experience hypnosis in different ways and it can also vary from session to session. There is no single correct way to feel.
Many people notice that they relax really well physically. You may feel heavier, especially in the arms or legs, or you may experience a light floating sensation. Breathing often becomes slower, easier and very comfortable.
Mentally, you may find your thoughts slow down. Instead or racing thoughts or worries, a sense of quietness can occur. You might feel more focused on the voice guiding you, while outside distractions seem to fade into the background.
Some people experience clear, vivid visualizations and imagery. Sometimes imagining themselves already achieving the changes they are seeking. Clear visualizations are not essential for the hypnosis to be effective but it can be very motivating and inspiring.
Other people though, may be less visually focused and instead connect more with the words and ideas in the hypnosis. This is all perfectly normal.
It is also common to drift in and out of focus during the hypnosis session. If you notice this happen, you may bring your attention back and listen again. This does not mean it isn’t working.
While the experience of hypnosis varies significantly from person to person, it is usually experienced as a calm, relaxed state with focused inward attention.
Changes in Your Sense of Time
Some people notice a change in their sense of time during hypnosis. usually a session will feel like it was much shorter than it actually was. Occasionally the opposite happens, and it feels like a very long time has passed. This is a natural effect of hypnosis, because you are deeply relaxed and your attention is focused inward, you may lose the awareness of time passing. This is a natural part of hypnosis and happens as your attention has become focused inward.
Do You Lose Control During Hypnosis?
A common concern about hypnosis is whether you lose control during the process. People tend to think of stage hypnosis or dramatized depictions of hypnosis in movies and television. However, these portrayals are not an accurate reflection of how hypnosis really works.
The answer however is no. During hypnosis you remain fully aware and in control at all times.
It is only possible to go into a hypnotic trance if you choose to do so. Hypnosis is a cooperative process. You decide to listen and follow the guidance. Nothing can be done to you without your consent and you cannot be made to do or say anything against your will. You mind’s usual filtering process ensure this (sometimes referred to as the conscious critical faculty).
During a hypnosis session you are able to hear everything that is being said. You can choose to stop the process any time, simply by opening your eyes and disengaging from the recording. Many people feel so relaxed that they feel physically very comfortable with no desire to move at all but this is a choice not a lack of ability.
Rather than losing control, hypnosis is a voluntary experience of relaxation and focused attention. It can create a calm mental state that supports insight, positive change and self-reflection. Read more about concerns in my article on whether hypnosis is safe.
Why Hypnosis Feels Different for Everyone
Hypnosis may feel different for each person, and it can vary from one session to another. There is no single way you should feel for it to be effective. The most important factor is simply following the guidance as best you can.
Some people relax very quickly, while others take longer. With regular practice, it usually becomes easier to get into a relaxed state. As your body relaxes, your mind often finds it easier to become quieter and more focused.
The depth of relaxation can vary. Sometimes you may only experience a light relaxation, especially with highly motivating content such as a hypnosis for motivation and energy. Deeper relaxation both physically and mentally can develop with practice. However, even with light relaxation the positive results can be just as beneficial. Hypnosis influences your subconscious mind and that can happen in even in a light trance. Read more about this in my article Can Anyone Be Hypnotized?
Your experience when using a hypnosis audio may also depend on how you are feeling that particular day. If you are very stressed or tired or if you have physical discomfort you may have a slightly different experience. This is completely normal.
Regardless of how it feels, the hypnosis is designed to help give you a positive influence to help you change in a way that benefits you. Sometimes this may be accompanied with a wonderful relaxation and vivid visualizations, and other times you may not feel that you relaxed especially well. Either way, there is still every reason to be optimistic about the hypnosis helping you. Consistency is key. Regular use over time for about 21 days (three weeks), can help reinforce positive change.
