Many people who want to try hypnosis wonder how they can get the best results from it.
Hypnosis is a natural state and a relaxing process, and there are simple steps you can take to improve your experience and make it more effective. Small changes in how you approach hypnosis can make a noticeable difference and improve results.

How to Get the Most out of Hypnosis
Hypnosis works best when you are relaxed, focused and free to engage with the process. It is important that you find a time and place where you are free to relax undisturbed. Hypnosis is something you need to actively participate in, so there is some effort required where you let yourself relax and focus.
By creating the right conditions and approaching hypnosis in the right way you can make it easier to benefit from the sessions. Read more about this in my article: How Does Hypnosis Work.
Choose a Quiet, Comfortable Place
It will be much easier for you to relax deeply if you choose the right surroundings, so try to ensure the following:
- Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed
- Sit or lie comfortably
- Have a cozy blanket to make sure you don’t get cold
- Close the blinds or draw the curtains/dim the lights
- Use headphones or earbuds ideally
A calm, comfortable environment will make it much easier for you to relax and have a better experience with hypnosis.
Follow the Guidance
Try to relax and go with it but don’t try too hard as that will be counterproductive and can make it harder to relax. Instead, simply listen and let yourself follow the guidance at your own pace. Hypnosis works best when you allow it to happen naturally rather than trying to get deeper.
Listen Regularly
Initially, repetition is very important in order to get the best results from hypnosis. Listening regularly helps in the following ways:
- Reinforces the positive hypnotic suggestions
- Strengthens new patterns of thinking
- Help you relax more deeply
- Makes it easy for you to experience hypnosis
Even if each session feels different, as you learn to relax more, the process is still working.
Be Open to the Process
It’s okay to be a little skeptical if you have not tried hypnosis before. You do not have to totally believe in it in order for it to work for you. All you need to do is be open to the idea, that can really make a big difference.
A relaxed open mind and being willing to try it and see what happens, will help you engage with the process and follow the guidance.
Let Go of Expectations
Many people expect that hypnosis is going to feel a certain way. This expectation can make it a little more difficult to get the best from the experience so try to have an open mind.
The experience of hypnosis does vary and sometimes it is very relaxing while at other times it might feel lighter. Once you have practised a few times you will likely find that your experience is deeper .
At first when trying hypnosis just let the process happen naturally and put aside any preconceived ideas. This way you are giving it the best chance to work well for you. Find out more in my article : What Does Hypnosis Feel Like.
Stay Consistent
Like many things, hypnosis gets easier and more effective through practice.
The more regularly you listen to your hypnosis download or CD:
- The easier it becomes to relax deeply
- The more comfortable and familiar the process feels to you
- Results start to happen naturally
- Ideas and suggestions feel clearer and stronger
Final Thoughts
Getting the most out of self hypnosis is about setting the right environment, following the guidance and practicing regularly.
Even if your experience feels different to what you expected, keep going because it can still be effective. Many people find that hypnosis gets easier with practice and with repetition the effects get stronger and more beneficial.

FAQs
How often should I listen to the hypnosis recording?
For best results, it helps to listen regularly, ideally daily or several times a week. This repetition reinforces the positive hypnotic suggestions and makes the process more effective.
What if I can’t relax during hypnosis?
It is very common to find it harder to relax at first. This is in part because your conscious mind is curious about the content and stays more alert at first. This does not mean the hypnosis is not working. Try to keep an open mind. With practice, most people will find it becomes easy to relax and engage with the process.
Do I need to concentrate fully for hypnosis to work?
No you do not. It is perfectly normal for your mind to wander at times. All you need to do is simply bring your attention back to the guidance whenever you realize you have drifted off. Then just continue with the process.
