Many people wonder if hypnosis is safe and whether they will lose control during the process. This is a common question, and it is natural to be cautious, especially given how hypnosis is often portrayed in TV, movies and stage hypnosis.
The reality is that hypnosis is a safe and cooperative process where you remain aware and in control. In this article we will explain how hypnosis works and address some common concerns about safety. If you are new to hypnosis, you may also find it helpful to read my article on what hypnosis is.

Is Hypnosis Safe? A Simple Answer
Yes, hypnosis is generally considered a safe and natural technique when used appropriately. It has been used in therapeutic settings for many years to support relaxation, behavior changes and emotional wellness. Hypnosis involves guiding you into a relaxed and focused state, similar to meditation or daydreaming and influencing the subconscious with positive hypnotic suggestions. You can find out more about hypnosis in my article on how does hypnosis work.
During hypnosis you remain aware of your surroundings and you are in control of your actions. It is not mind control and you certainly cannot be made to do anything against your will.
Hypnosis is safe for most people and is a calm and relaxing experience that can support positive change. Anyone with a neurological condition such as epilepsy should consult with their healthcare professional before beginning. Deep relaxation techniques may have an effect in rare cases so seek medical guidance if this is a concern.
Will I Lose Control During Hypnosis?
No. This is a common misconception about hypnosis. In reality, hypnosis is a collaborative process where you choose to follow the guidance and participate. You can stop at any time simply opening your eyes or disengaging from the process. You remain aware and in control during hypnosis. Most people can experience hypnosis, which you can read more about in my article on can anyone be hypnotized.
Even in deeper relaxed states you are still conscious and able to make decisions.
Can Hypnosis Make Me Do Anything Against my Will?
No. Hypnosis cannot cause you to do anything that is against your values and beliefs. You are in control and aware throughout the process and your mind will naturally reject any suggestions that did not feel right or appropriate for you. Your conscious mind is still listening during hypnosis, especially so initially, while you evaluate the content, this is called the conscious critical faculty and it filters what you will and will not accept or agree with.
Will I be Aware of what is Happening in Hypnosis?
Most people remain completely aware of everything that happens in their hypnosis session. They may feel very deeply relaxed and some people may mentally drift a little and miss parts of the content. This is perfectly normal and is explained further in my article on why hypnosis may not seem to work. With a hypnosis download or CD, you may find that you notice things that you may have missed on previous listens. Find out more in my article on what hypnosis feels like.
Attention drifting is perfectly normal in hypnosis and does not affect the overall results. Learn more about hypnosis in this article – What is Hypnosis?
Who Should Be Cautious About Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is safe for most people but anyone with specific medical or neurological conditions should consult a healthcare professional if they have any concerns before beginning.
In particular, if you have any concerns related to conditions where deep relaxation can have an effect, it is best to seek professional medical advice first.
Safety During Practice
Because hypnosis involves relaxation and people usually close their eyes, it should not be practiced while:
- Driving
- Operating Machinery
- Doing anything that requires your full concentration
Choose a quiet safe environment where you can relax free of interruption.
