Find a comfortable place with a good view of the moon. Perhaps you have a nice outdoor space where you can sit and have a good view, but you do not need to be outside, so you can sit by a window inside if you prefer. Make sure you are as comfortable as you can be. Ensure you are warm too, as this will reduce distractions. By beginning this practice of moon gazing you become tuned into the moon and its phases and changes. So you may find it helpful to keep track of and understand the different phases of the moon. Keep a notebook handy while to practice this, so you can keep track of your progress.

    2. How to Begin Moon Gazing Meditation

Now that you are comfortable you can begin by taking a few deep breaths as you try to relax and quieten your mind. With each breath out, imagine you are letting go of tension. Begin to look at the moon and allow your breathing to settle down to a gentle comfortable breath. If you find your mind is wandering or offering up distracting thoughts, try focusing on the feeling of your beath at your nostrils, with each inhalation and exhalation. This is a simple focus to train your mind to stop over-thinking. Keep gazing at the moon and try to keep your mind peaceful and your body relaxed.

Continue to gaze at the moon and let your mind be quiet and your body relaxed. If you notice any thoughts coming into your mind, try to just let them go. As with calming mindfulness meditations, try to not get involved with the thoughts. Anytime your mind wanders off, bring your attention back to the moon and the energy of the moonlight. Continue this for 15 – 40 minutes as desired.

    3. Developing Your Moon Meditation Practice

The first few times you try this meditation you may feel that nothing much is happening, but keep with it because results are often not instant with meditation and mindfulness. Often several attempts are needed to get a breakthrough. Keep practicing and get a routine going where you do your meditation at about the same time each evening. As you do this, the routine will help you to achieve deeper states and more insightful experiences.
