Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in Hypnosis

How CBT is Used in Hypnosis

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques are often used in hypnosis to help change unhelpful thought patterns, behaviors, habits and emotional responses.

During hypnosis the mind becomes relaxed and focused and makes it easier to introduce suggestions and positive ideas that support change. When you are in a hypnotic trance, suggestions and ideas can be accepted more easily.

What is CBT?

CBT is a separate therapy from hypnotherapy and includes a practical and common sense questioning process about your beliefs and thoughts that may be holding you back. This therapy process focuses on the conscious mind and helps you to change your reactions. However this does require having a conscious focused approach as you face challenges and willpower to make the changes happen.

CBT Combined with Hypnosis

When CBT is applied in hypnosis it can address the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. This can be very effective at changing things. An example we could consider is self-confidence. If you are in the habit of thinking negative thoughts about yourself, self hypnosis can help by inputting positive ideas while you relax and listen in a hypnotic state. CBT techniques tend to challenge negative beliefs, so this kind of approach is commonly used in hypnosis, often with excellent results.

Desensitization & Visualization in Hypnosis

Using CBT in hypnosis helps apply a positive idea while you are in a suggestible mental state. Other ways CBT can be used in hypnosis are through visualization techniques. When this is a purely CBT based clinical approach you might have to engage in desensitizing activities. With hypnosis you can visualize doing those things before doing them in real life situations. The changes feel easier when you are in hypnosis because your mind and body are in a relaxed state.

Using CBT for Emotional Triggers and Trauma

Sometimes past traumatic experiences can create emotional patterns that are difficult to change. Feelings may have been suppressed to an extent that they are difficult to talk about.

In these cases, hypnosis may be used alongside CBT techniques to help address some of these issues and manage the emotions associated with the memories.

This can help reduce emotional triggers and support positive reactions and feelings.
