    Can Anyone be Hypnotized?

Many people believe that they can’t be hypnotized but it is actually quite rare to not be able to go into a hypnotic state. Usually if a person believes they cannot be hypnotized it may be because they have doubts about the process and so they are putting up a barrier and deciding it would not work. It could they are a little afraid of hypnosis, perhaps believing some of the misrepresentations of hypnosis in movies and television.

Occasionally someone will resist going into a hypnotic state because they don’t really want to make the change they are heading for. An example might be giving up smoking. The conscious logical mind thinks it is a great idea to stop smoking but the habit part of the mind wants to keep things the same. This may cause a person to resist being hypnotized. Hypnosis can’t make you do something you don’t want to do.

    Are you Receptive to Hypnosis?

If you want to make a change and you feel positive about it you may be receptive to hypnosis. Hypnosis can help you make changes and establish new habits. The thing about hypnosis is that while it is powerful in what can be achieved with it, it is also a very simple and subtle thing. We are all slipping into hypnotic states in our everyday lives, it is really ordinary in that sense. Using hypnosis as a deliberate way to establish new habits, make changes or eradicate fears is only really using the same kind of trance state we may experience at other times

    Trance State in Daily Life

Here are some examples of where you may have been in a trance state:

    • Watching a compelling movie and finding your whole attention is on it.
    • Driving home and and realizing you drove the whole way on “autopilot”.
    • Being so absorbed in a novel that you stop hearing things going on around you.
    • Playing a video game and realizing hours have passed.

Who Can’t be Hypnotized and Why?

If someone is under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants then they may struggle to follow the instructions to get into the hypnotic state. Even then, if they did get into a trance the suggestions work and visualizations may be lost on them due to distractions, drowsiness and difficultly concentrating. Severe mental issues can also make it difficult to get into hypnosis.

Aside from these issues the only reason a person may not be successfully hypnotized is due to fear, lack of understanding or resistance. So how hypnotizable are you? – Take the quiz and find out.

    Fear of Hypnosis

Fear of hypnosis is caused by misrepresentation of how it works and what it can do. This is easily remedied by reading about hypnosis. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are respected and referenced in many medical studies and journals so just a small amount of research should resolve any fears and anxieties. Always remember – hypnosis cannot make you do anything you do not want to do.
